Figma Import Not Working? Check Access, Frame Export and Preview Loading

A stage-by-stage guide that separates credential problems from export delays and viewer issues, with a safe support checklist.
When a Figma import fails, first identify the last step that worked. Loading a frame list, rendering a frame, downloading the export and displaying the saved preview are different operations. A failure in one stage does not establish that all the others are broken.
This guide follows Swelik's current import flow and explains what to check without exposing credentials. It cannot diagnose a particular incident from a generic message alone. Use the stage, the exact message and safe runtime diagnostics to narrow the cause.
The frame list does not load
Check that the URL identifies a supported Figma design file. A community page, a link to an unrelated website or a local .fig filename is not the same input. Open the intended design in Figma and obtain the appropriate file link.
Then confirm that the account associated with the token can access the file and that the token has file_content:read permission. Check its expiry or revocation status through Figma. Do not assume that a valid token for another account has access to a client's design.
If the request reports a rate limit, stop repeated attempts and allow the relevant limit to reset. Re-entering the same information rapidly does not correct a quota restriction. The access guide explains the credential checks separately from exporting.
Frames load, but the frame you need is missing
Swelik's picker reads supported frames at the levels covered by the file-list request. It does not expose every deeply nested design layer. Check where the intended review frame sits in the document structure.
Use a clearly named top-level review frame when practical. If restructuring the source is inappropriate, export the intended frame manually as PDF. Avoid moving or duplicating shared source content without considering the rest of the team's workflow.
Also check that you loaded the intended file. Similar project names and copied links can make an otherwise correct frame list appear wrong. Compare the file and page context before diagnosing the frame itself.
The selected frame fails during export
Frame listing reads metadata; export asks Figma to render the chosen frame. The latter can take longer and has its own failure conditions. Successfully loading frames therefore does not prove that the rendering request will finish within the available connection time.
Figma's file endpoint documentation notes that a requested render can return a null image result, including when a node cannot be rendered. Check whether the chosen frame is visible, contains the intended content and can be exported normally in Figma.
Try one smaller, uncomplicated frame to determine whether the issue is specific to the design. Do not describe that test as proof that every large export will fail. It is a way to compare two controlled cases and identify the stage that needs attention.
A timeout or connection message appears
The updated Swelik importer gives frame rendering a bounded longer deadline and retries selected temporary connection failures once. It does not retry invalid credentials or a rate-limit response automatically. These measures improve handling; they cannot guarantee that every upstream request succeeds.
A hosting proxy can also end a long request before the application finishes. If you receive an HTML error page or an interrupted connection instead of the expected response, inspect the safe server logs and hosting behavior. Do not infer the exact cause solely from elapsed time.
For a practical fallback, export the frame to PDF in Figma and use Upload file. This bypasses the API export step while retaining the preview-sharing workflow. Keep the export focused and inspect it before sending the resulting link.
A preview is created, but it does not display correctly
First confirm that the saved project is available and that you opened the intended public URL. If an original download is enabled, inspect that file separately to distinguish an export problem from a viewer problem.
Check whether the PDF contains the expected content in another suitable viewer. If the export itself is empty or incorrect, the browser preview cannot reconstruct the missing design. Return to the source frame and export settings.
If the original is correct but the preview fails, record the device, browser, visible error and affected page. A very tall or complex PDF can stress rendering differently from a small document. Avoid repeatedly creating duplicate projects while investigating the same artifact.
Report the issue without leaking secrets
Provide the failed stage, approximate time, user-visible message and a safe diagnostic code if available. Explain whether a smaller frame succeeded and whether a manual PDF export opened correctly. Those details are more actionable than a screenshot of an empty page alone.
Do not share the token, private management URL or signed export URL in a public report. If you supply a public preview for debugging, confirm that the design is appropriate to share and keep it available while the issue is investigated.
Startup messages such as a server becoming ready do not diagnose a Figma request. A server-close error may be relevant to hosting behavior, but it does not by itself establish that the Figma token or selected frame is invalid.
Frequently asked questions
Should I generate a new token for every failed export?
Not without evidence of an access problem. If frame listing succeeds and rendering fails, check the export stage and message first. Replace or revoke a credential when its status or exposure makes that necessary.
Can increasing the timeout fix every import?
No. Permission, quota, unsupported inputs, rendering failures and hosting limits require different responses. A longer bounded timeout only addresses requests that need more time within the supported infrastructure.
Will a failed update remove my existing preview?
The replacement workflow prepares the new artifact before activating it. Check the project status after a failed attempt; the earlier active design should remain available. Report any case where that behavior differs, including the exact stage and safe diagnostic details.
